Every year for the past 5 years one of my closest girlfriends and I go to The Latino Festival that takes place here in Cincinnati, OH. Next to the holidays, vacation, and the Super Bowl it is a weekend that I look forward to. I love learning about different cultures, norms, and history ( In my former life I was an anthropologist). Therefore, any event or center where I can learn about something new and become exposed to a different way of thinking and living, I am all about learning about it. Every year that I go to the Latino Festival, I may not advance my learning on Latino and Hispanic history, but I sure do enjoy learning about the different foods that comes from those cultures.
The Latino Festival in Cincinnati is awesome to me because the food is cheap, there is food from different parts of the Latino and Hispanic origins such as Cuba, Dominican Republic, Columbia, Puerto Rico etc. Even food from parts of Mexico is apart of the mix. I have tried Yucca, Plantains, pork made several ways, and Churros, which are my favorite. This year I tried some different foods and some foods that are pretty common but with different seasonings and marinades that are authentic to the Latino culture. Let me walk you through my food tasting adventure!
This yummy looking thing is called a Huarache. It is popular in Mexico City. It has a crunchy, thick, corn like tortilla topped with beef, cilantro, spiced, queso fresco cheese, and an amazing Mexican taco sauce. It’s almost like a flat soft taco but a crunchy tortilla with a chewy center. It was absolutely amazing!
This isn’t anything you probably haven’t seen before but this roasted corn on the cob is sprinkled with a whole bunch of badness such as mayo, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, and Parmesan cheese. Super flavorful and fun to eat.
Now this puppy right here was my absolute favorite thing to eat. This was a basic Chicken Torta Sandwich. O-M-G! You won’t need to eat anything else with it because its filling enough. The bread had a slight crisp to it from being on the grill and the chicken was super flavorful and moist. Man, I am getting hungry just thinking about how good it was. If you ever go to an authentic Mexican restaurant, I recommend that you try a Torta!
Every year at the Latino Festival or Cinco De Mayo festival I seek this baby out. The first thing I look for are tamales. Tamales and Chimichungas are probably my favorite Mexican dishes. They are so good. Not everyone can make them flavorful throughout the mashed corn that you are seeing in the picture. Just keep on trying them. Even if the first one isn’t that great.
Here are some extra pictures from the Latino Festival and how they prepare the food. You can see all the love!
Beautiful beadery and craftsmanship.
I just love the Latino Festival. I look forward to going every year. I love food, the energy, and the beautiful crafts that is made to share with the rest of us horrible craftsmen. Get out this year and go to a festival of another culture or time and learn something new because learning is “sexy” (Yea that was real cheesy. True but cheesy).
